Palio di Siena One of the most popular Italian festivals is the Palio di Siena, a horse competition held in honor of the Virgin of Provenzano. This festival has been celebrated since 1644 and every year, during the month of July, the city is divided into 17 sectors that are represented by a horse each. These horses compete in the central square of Siena and the horse that arrives first is the winner. The Palio festival lasts four days, the last being the horse races, and the preceding ones serve as preparation for the race. This festival has been celebrated in Siena for over 400 years. The origins date back to the 17th century when it began to commemorate the end of the Florentine siege after the Battle of Montaperti.
